Beinn Dubh The Black Whisky (700ml) is a unique single malt Scotch whisky produced in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, near the village of Aviemore. Distilled by Speyside Distillery, this expression is renowned for its unusually dark color and rich character, making it stand out visually and aromatically from more traditional whiskies. Its name, Beinn Dubh—pronounced "Ben Doo"—means "Black Mountain" in Gaelic, a tribute to the dramatic landscape of the Cairngorms that inspires it.
Matured in heavily charred ruby port casks, this whisky derives its dark hue and deep flavor profile from both the cask treatment and the influence of rich fortified wine. The result is a bold, distinctive whisky that offers a modern twist on Highland tradition.
Tasting Notes Profile:
Nose: The first impression is deep and brooding, with aromas of dark berries, blackcurrant jam, and rich port wine. Layers of treacle, roasted coffee beans, and dark chocolate emerge, complemented by hints of clove, charred oak, and a touch of molasses. The nose is intense and complex, delivering a sensory experience that is both warming and intriguing.
Palate: On the palate, the whisky is full-bodied and velvety, offering flavors of blackberry compote, toasted nuts, and bitter dark chocolate. There’s a luscious sweetness from the port cask, balanced by notes of espresso, burnt sugar, and spice. The richness continues to evolve with hints of aniseed and a slight smokiness, giving the whisky a powerful yet refined structure.
Finish: The finish is long, warming, and satisfyingly bold, with lingering notes of cocoa, stewed dark fruits, and oak char. A gentle bitterness, reminiscent of dark roast coffee, remains on the tongue, leaving a memorable and complex aftertaste.
